The X Files Notes !!

Setting - Is in the dark in a dark house a very good setting to create that scary , spooky sides of things  very dull lighting at the start ....

TV fuzzes -  Offline , bit scary as it just cut off - creates tension also in the music too

Quick panning shots and tracking shots to create suspense and tenstion - makes the audience think of what's going on so it creates questions for the audience.

Police investigations (agents)

Dwain - Handicapped - mental , crazy - protagonist

Dwain is holding the people hostage so for e.g the doc and the other people you can see there terrified of what his motive might be .

Dwain was a former of a FBI , guns firing off , white flashes creates tension when Dwain is holding the gun when he is pointing  the gun at the four people . It creates suspense, because you wonder what he's going to do if he is going to pull the trigger or not .

Dwain has a flash back of him seeing the aliens , then it dips to white , it shows he's fears that he is terrified .

Flashes of the aliens so a lightning effect flash of  as he is being transported where it dips to white .

Thriller Notes !!

Thriller - To make you think , keep you guessing of what's going to happen next with violence implied .
Mystery , Suspense , and Dramatic  Irony in thrillers .
Horror - Scares you with the more visual parts , so for e.g guts , blood , gory details etc .

Narrative - How the story is told ( Story Structure)

Robert Mckee's conventions of a thriller

Protagonist - The person were associated with that gets into our heads , (good guy)

Antagonist - The bad guy to hurt and stop the protagonist

Suspense - Is to keep the audience hanging on , keep them guessing of what may happen so for e.g feelings of excitement or anxious of uncertainty.

Theartre of the mind - Is to make you think to imply creating questions for the viewer .

Make it personal - Make it interesting , personal  to lose at the end to the protagonist

Protagonist must be at the mercy of the antagonist - so for e.g Bond films

Twist / Turns - Prizes along the way that the audience don't know .

Mystery !!

Closed Mystery  - Who the killer is ? so for e.g the game cludeo

Open Mystery - We start to know who committed the crime

Suspense is about holding back the viewer to keep them guessing

Dramatic Irony - Is where the viewer knows more than the characters
We might know how the story ends .

Therefore our focus of attention is concern for the characters involved

Mc Guffin - Is where it brings the plot forwards , Mc Guffin is a device or plot element in a movie that is deliberately placed to catch the audiences attention .

different types of thriller's !!

With a thriller some people get mixed up with the two as some people think it's the same thing but it's not . With a horror it's to make you scared  with all the guts , blood , the gory visual elements, but in a thriller it plays with your mind , it keeps you guessing of what's going to happen next so for e.g the tension within the music , excitement ,  and suspense are the main key elements in a thriller that creates this dynamic .

What are the most well known sub genres ??
Well with  a thriller you get all different types of sub genre , that creates tension , the narrative side of the story , visual elements , suspense etc, but they all vary in their own ways but they still make up to a thriller of what you would expect anyway.

Conspiracy Thriller - Is when the protagonist ( hero , the good guy) , are armatures , or journalist investigators , where he finds himself on task , but then soon realizes that he has entered into a deep situation  where the protagonist has to confront his enemies , with the biggest threat to make a run for it . Examples snake eyes ( 1998 flight pan (2005) awake (2005)

Action Thriller - Is when were introduced to our hero's, who is therefore put into a dangerous situation and enemies , which they have to find a way out with all the suspense , the tension going on with violence so for e.g people shooting , fighting , with making you think of what's going to happen next sort of thing , in some films it can make you hang on so keep you guessing !! Examples the Bourne Ultimatum (2007) , Bourne Supermarcy (2004),  Inception (2010) , Bond films , Dark Night (2008) ,

Supernatural Thriller - Is when it brings something different of  mixed elements to our screens , with all the suspense , tension  and twists . Sometimes Protagonist , or Antagonist , may have like these super natural powers which may make them turn into a different form , so for e.g were wolves , vampires , zombies or even into a big fiery monster so for e.g Fantastic Four (2011) , Breaking Dawn  (2011), Vampires Assistant (2010) Legion(2010)

Crime Thriller - Is basically a form of both fusions of a crime and thriller will all the suspense , tension going on  . Thriller films are a suspense of  successful or failed crimes . These films main focus on  the criminal(s) , rather then the police people . Crime thrillers are also recognizable with psychological to it that emphasis into the action parts to create more depth into a crime thriller . These films include , FBI , murders ,  serial killers , robberies , chases and heist . Ocean 11 ( 2002) True Romance (1993) Outrage 1998)

Psychological Thrillers - Is which the conflict between the main character is mental, emotional  rather then physical , which leads into a violent resolution which can play with our minds  within the two characters were associated with . This can involve deceptive games that are going on with the two characters which can be bit confusing of what to believe which can re in stake that with not believing it that it turns out false in the end. This can often can incorporate elements of mystery , action and drama . So for e.g Memento 2000 , (Orphan 2009) Se7en (1995)

Drama Thrillers - Can consist of elements of thriller, so the film will be much slower paced and also involves the characters emotional side showing more emotions, psychologically , and maybe sometimes of physical . This will come with the plot and with it's twist and turns .Example The Interpreter (2005)

Qualitative research!! - different examples !!

Qualitative !!

e.g , Biography , Interviews , Vox pots , beliefs , surveys , questionnaires and diaries

Good points about Qualitative reseach !!

. You can find information about peoples experiences so if you have an one to one with someone  you can find out a bit more about that person so an insight in their life.

. You can find out alot of information of someone in full detail with vaild information from their life .

. You can find easily acessible information so for e.g if you wanted to find out a bit more about The Wanted (boy band) ( I love them). You can go into a book store at pick out their biography and find out more about them . So it's easy to go to a library to find stuff out about an actor ,comedian  and writers etc.

. With doing an interview you can also go in depth about talking to someone about their experiences , feelings , emotions which can be a touchy topic if it's something personal to them. You may see their emotions showing when they actually talk about a topic which maybe upsetting so something that happened in their life .

. Vox pots is a good way to get peoples opinions about something , by walking up to them and asking something that you want to know about or ethier asking their opinion about the subject .

Diraries - Are good way to express your feelings and how you feel emotionally when its written down you intend to write allot, maybe to do with experiences that you have to face or you have done that have happened in your life.

Disadvantages !!

. Sources are subject bias , as the contenet may reflect on that person life with strong opinions of that person .

. It can question the authecity and credibility of the response given.

. Background information can be missing so for e.g the person may give you in detail about their expereinces and etc but may not give the actual background material as it could be a delicate subject .

. You can't really use qualitative research in statistics data as theres alot of information about a person so it be hard to put into a graph .

.  For e.g  if your working for the BBC , and you go and find information about a old person story  , then it may take some time for that person who is the interviewee to gain full trust on the person so the interview . They could be telling them something maybe disturbing to them and it might be hard to tell their story... So it may take some time for trust building to take action , this is the main thing to work on .

. The data that is given maybe in accurate so they maybe making it up on the spot  or maybe biased.

. You'll have to make up your own mind if you believe the person giving the answers (maybe untrue what there talking about .

Example

Questionnaire is a good way to find out what people think of something, so bascially give their own opinion so for e.g the person who's creating the questionnaire might be selling a product so in a shop he want's to find out what people think of the product if they would use it, do they like it  to do this they would tick the boxes that are sustainable to their answer . It's a research method of what you want to find out about something by handing out as many questionnaires as possible to find out and gather information of what people think. It's good way because you can get different opionions about a product just an example , everyone will have different opinions to each other so it's good way to see how other peoples opinions are different to one another. Questionnaires are easy to fill out it will take less than five minutes as you just have to tick the boxes or it may have a  open question that might ask what you think of this product ? so it's given you a chance to write what you think of it express yourself if you like it or not . Bascially questionnaires flow nicely after each other so male or female , then you would have the age group your in ,tick boxes so for e.g do you use the product  regularly? This is a form of a closed question, so twice a day , once a week . often , regulary , now and then, it makes it flow in a good way because that what you would expect for questionnaire to flow nicely . Questionnaire you can gain alot of data which can be used as evidence if used for a project or something  you can show you have asked people to fill out your questionnaires by getting different views and opinions of finding information about a product .

Diaries are good way to write down everything that happened in your life, keeping up to date with it . It can be very personal to that person writing a diary about their life, it can show emotions so images can represent how a person feels whether there happy or sad it can show a visual element of that .It's good way to express yourself in a little diary like this , it's yours you can write whatever you like. When people are writing they feel they can write allot of stuff , sometimes it's better to write then tell someone how you feel because you can actually feel emotions inside you  when you read something personal about someone . It can tell an insight to a persons life of a story how it started , middle and how it ended so it's a good form of qualitative research.

Biography's are good to find out more information about who they really are , success , whats it like being in boy band, the guys them self more then you already know etc. It tells you a good insight of what there life has been like over the years. Some people can be influenced by them , so there music they can be aspired by them of there success and how they have reached today . It can tell a story just like a diary when they write things that have happened in their life and they express themselves so much which tells the start to middle to end . It's good if you want to know more in depth about the band . People find it easier to write because then it's out for everyone to get which they can enjoy and find out information they didn't know before which can be quite interesting . It's good use of qualitative research .

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16508982

Here is another example of Interview that has been done by the BBC interviewer ( Nicky Triggle) health coronspondent  BBC News. Interviews are a good way to find out a bit of what's happening to the NHS and how the hospitals told to improve productivity,  getting an insight on the people who work within the NHS and what they think of this and is it possible for this to happen. Interviews can tell you alot of information especially if you get an interview with someone working at NHS hospital whether it's a doctor or nurse , you still get an insight in what they think of the situation and giving there opinions about this situation .The information giving is like an questionnaire but instead you are being interviewed by someone which you can give full information in depth what they think and can give you a good gather of information by someone answering the questions which the interviewer comes up with to give (expression what they feel about this situation. Interviews are good way to get more of a personal response , then a questionnaire you write in all down but when giving information so the interviewee giving it across it's so much better because you're getting an insight in what there saying and some of it can be quite interesting in what they have to say .

So with the BBC interview ( Hospital about inproving the productivity)
So a report by the Nuffeild trust higlhted a cost area where productivity can be made which the hospital has to go through the trust too see if they have enough money to improve on the productivity. They have to make a saving by 2015 .What they want to happen is a  full improvement on the productivity . So for e.g cutting lenghts of stay , more into case works on surgery side of work and improving ways for goods to be brought in .  Statistics are involved so savings can be made in HR finace , so 70% accounts . Report point of view says " to get skill  mixes right to try and limit staff working overtime so that will improve on savings so costs striking back to improve on the productivity . To tackle sickness rates , so staff being absent or ill they can't lose their staff as they need as many hands as they can especially if it's good doctors they can't afford to have them absent . We need as many docs and nurses who know there stuff to a professional standard. Between January March  2011, average sickness rate was 4.24% falling from 4.48 for the same period inn 2010. This is quite a bit it went down from. Use of Quantitative research with the use of statistics so figures.

To do this one person says they need to cut back on patients services , meals , canteen , laundry ,television rooms , and trolley service and etc . It's really a hospital where docs and nurses look after the patience when there ill but it's like a premium hospital so for e.g games , TV rooms , meals that the nurses bring to patients even thought it's nice to have these stuff but cut backing on this will improve the rates of these to improve on the more important stuff so medical improvement on the works of surgery and how to kill these sort of illness , and improving more than the body which they know how to do for e,g nose , knee , shoulder etc . Improving on bringing goods in that can help patients more in effective way to improve the equipment better .

Judith Smith, head of policy at the Nuffield Trust, said: "It is very difficult to justify cuts if inefficiencies in areas such as rates of day case surgery, length of stay and the purchasing of hospital supplies remain untackled.

David Stout, of the NHS Confederation, which represents managers, said the Nuffield Trust was "absolutely right" to flag up the need to improve productivity.

Health minister Simon Burns added: "We agree the NHS should and can be more efficient and improve the quality of its services at the same time."

These are good examples of peoples opinions to get there own opinion on the matter they all seem to agree with  the improvement of productivity and improving services in the NHS in a effective way . So you can see that it will make a huge impact on the staffs lives and the patience lives to improve on the services that are in the hospital . The docs and nurses can test their knowledge and to improve on more on the surgery side of things that they are probably capabale of as they probably have been to medical school or uni to understand  the medical terms , the body , organs , how they work , the best operations, surgery and that lot . So they can put there experties into action which I'm sure they can do . If there real doctors and nurses then they can do anything really .Latest data shows that patients spend 7.2 days in hospital on average - higher than the international average and twice the figure in Denmark. Improving discharge arrangements, particularly at weekends, would make a big difference because you get all the alcoholics in on a Friday Saturday night and there taking the beds of people who need it most . So they should just go and sleep it of really instead of the doctors and nurses wasting there time on people like these, someone could be dying or needing there help more. Instead of having people coming in because there got bad cold , or there arm hurts or something that's not death threatening well if it's broken a bone or something then that's fair enough see a doctor but real illness should be dealt more something that needs to be treated .

How well have they done it ??
Well I think they have done there research good , it's got statistics data in there with fact numbers of information of savings they need to reach is 20 billion in 2015.We had an interview done with one of the BBC Respondent Nicky Triggle who has interviewed the NHS about what they think of improving productivity to get there intake on the situation that has been put forward. I think it be good that they start saving for the new improvement it be more effective way to improve on surgery dynamics , bring goods in that can be more treatable for the patients . For this to happen yes cut backs I think would have to be made , because they don't need all these premium items , services it costing them more for the stuff if they cut back on these then they probably would have some money for in the trust fund to help improve on productivity . So they should reduce the amount of these not necessarily get rid of them all but some , then they can think more on the patients on treating them effective way of treatments , reducing the sickness absence ,discharging patients if they don't really need to stay overnight . This would make sense if they thought about it twice and dealt with proper situations. It's good they had Qualitative research used to find out about the NHS ,  people who work within the NHS what there view is on the situation , so peoples opinions they all said it be good idea to improve on productivity so they all think it's best to do for staff and patients . Good use of an interview that has been taking place finding out information in this improvement of saving money, peoples opinions , saving money for the new improvement and cutting back cuts even though it can be hard in financial element within the NHS. There was good use of key information and statistics data that backed up evidence so overall it was good .

Quantitiative research Supersize me !!

What is quantitative research is all about satistics , tally charts , facts , and graphs so maps , bar charts , pie charts and etc , that show data of information but in statistics (numbers this can represent information with the main facts.)

Good things about Quantitative research !!

. It shows data easily with facts coming up on screen

. It can show reliable information with statistics that has been backed up

. It can show accuaracy of the data , that is true .

. It can be so much easier than loads of writing , it can show the main data of statistics .

. When statistics come up on screen they may be animated it makes more fun

. Reduces bias

Disadvantages of Qunatitative data !!

. Statistics need to be constant of updating because you have all these statistics on the internet from ages ago of random stuff that happened in 2002 , 2004 , and they don't update it to this year.

. Statistics don't show you the meaninng of feelings , motivations so an insight into that persons life.... It just gives you the fact information which  apart from that is as good use of source.

. The information (statistics ) doesn't give you much in detail as it is just numbers .

. It doesn't really tell us about peoples emotions , how they actually feel within a subject.

. It reflects there experience but not nessarrey of the subject .

Example !! Super size me !!

In this documentary of super size me it shows the people of America which the US is the fattest nation in the world. There is a voice over at the start saying "1 million people are officially obese including more 60% of adults." It represents the data by showing us a map of how many people in 1988 - 200 has doubled the amount of people are obese. It also shows us  kids who have reached the underweight staged and has now became  obese and adalesents who are 3 times overweight .More than 1/4 people in Mississippi are obese more than  25% population is obese . The map was animated so that shows a good way of understanding how many people so kids, adults who are obese with the colour coded colours, it makes it recognizable easily. It gives that fun factor in way.It shows a close up of a man smoking , the voice over-  "it is second into obesity of deaths of preventing smoking." It comes up on screen 400,000 deaths are associated with bad illness . It has an image of  a lady who is trying to walk but you can see how obese she looks. She is associated with a wheel chair so that kinda relates to the facts of the number, that people who are fat and who smoke will have some sort of illness if they carry on eating fast food. If they can't fight the illness then they are likely to die.  People in America visit  fast food restaurants so MC Donald's is a very popular one which 1/4 people have one for breakfast lunch and dinner well all day as it shows on this documentary (no offence though).  By having this all the time it can cause major liver and heart problems.

In 2002 (law suit) few American people did get fed up with their weight as they sued MC Donald's .It comes up with this image of MC Donald's character which looks like it's came of a news bulletin or something . The quote that was used " Sued the Bastards" this connects to the audience it makes it interesting and informs the audience of what's going on. I think it's stupid really because it's there own fault for getting to a stage of obesity. They have a choice if they want to eat  fast foods  but they choose to eat them. So it's not really the company's fault to be honest.Well if they ate less of  eating fatty food then they may see some progress and not reaching to obesity .(No offence though). The next bit is where they show a diagram of a 14 year old girl and a 19 year old girl and it shows how slim they were and as they ate fatty foods (MC Donald's) they became obese . So the 14 year old girl - is 4 ft 10 and puts on weight of 170 pounds and the 19 year old girl is 5 ft 6 and puts on weight of 270 pounds . The way they do this is animated so it's like a drawing and it animates up from being slim from a young child and then to obesity where it reaches to large drawing . It shows a very good understanding of how it works of being young then you turn into this horrible size. Animation makes it interesting to watch bring more fun on screen . Then you have like images(archive footage with cutaways) of fat people outside hanging  around  out of a restaurant and shows the most popular fast food place is MC Donald's, 1/4 visit MC Donald's .

The next shot is where it shows you a map of showing 30,000 fast food restaurant of MC Donald's over the world and over 100 countries which goes goes over 6 continents around the world,so it's very popular.  You  can see that it's kept to MC Donald's colours in the writing at the bottom of the screen it says 46 million served daily so all the American people visit fast food restaurant and it's more of the population of Spain. It shows you pictures of different MC Donald's restaurants  so in town , air ports , hospitals and etc so there everywhere you turn . Then you have images of  fat people , getting fast food which looks horrible I do like MCdonald's  don't get me wrong but it's very fattening the foods and has alot fat in it which I don't want to look fat as it can make you and it's not very good.So i',m sticking to my healthy option and eating healthier as it so much better to have a balanced diet and with exercising too is a good way to keep you fit and healthy.

You have the guy Morgan who is going to try this out by getting some medical advice first , he went to see three doctors about fasting. This is a research method of Qualitative research as it is do with getting 3 experts advice on their own opinions about the matter and you find out facts as well. He went to a GP .Health , blood , Exercise , walking experts to help him how it will affect him and waht will happen so like moodswings , chloestrol will go up hell gain weight and etc. , to find out the information of his blood , his health change , his blood , walking and that lot . So it shows you quite alot of good advice the doctors have giving to him for him to be aware of when he is fastening.

In this second part he starts his fastening ...... Morgan asks people do they eat fast food the man says "once in a while" , "how often" "about 2 times a week" , then he asks this young guy how many times he has MC Donald's he was like "4 5 times a week."  This is known as vox pots as he asking people when they eat fast food ,so this is research method of Qualitative research as is finding out peoples opinions . I think having MCdonald's all the time like the guy above says he has one 4 , 5 times a week .....That is bad and that will make you fat having it for breakfast , lunch and dinner. It will make you chloestrol and your blood go up so it's not really good aand you will see a change in your life my eating MC donald's all the time . If you have it all the time it will make you sick which isn't good and then you start to develop illness along the way which won't be good .... So a balance diet is good =)

The final result !!!

So after the binge of fast food after 6 weeks after eliminated super size got him and he had changed in the way he feels , the way he ate , his apperance slightly , weight  , blood , cholestrol levels and etc . So day 1 his body fat was 11%  and by day 30 he gained 18% of body fat and he now he weighes 24 pounds and his cholesterol level has gone up to 230 it went up to 64 points . His liver was turning into fat , he was so under national average weight of men, which is 22%. In this diagram it's well animated as you can tell how he started of by day 1 with him being slim and then by day 30 it changes to where he has put weight on so you can tell the difference in what has happened to his body weight . It shows a clear understanding of how it happened with the key information and numbers with the main facts of the change . He doubled his heart rate 2x .... he felt depressed and exhausted most of the time and  there were changes of his mood swings and his sex life was nil. He got massive cravings , but when he didn't  he had headaches. He asked the docs if people should eat fast foods , one was like "no" and another one said "it should be balanced diet and overall exercise and healthy diet." "It does cause heart problems and livers disease."( by the girl doctor) .

It comes up with a news bulletin out of a page showing that schools have banned sugary stuff , this went around the world of San Francisco , New York and Texas.Detroit is now the fattest city in a America . 9 overall jumped up 3 places into the top ten. Now MC Donald's is bringing in a new premium salad  ....  So a healthy option which is always good to have instead of eating fatty foods. Then they have this new cheese burger called the MC Grill but it has more sugar than the cookies. In the cookies it has 751 grams of fat in them . This came up on the screen animated with the MC Donald's colours in the background with the cookie box of the MC Donald's characters with sticking to the logo and the colours . The colours are reconizable as we associate MC donald's with the red , yellow the big M and the characters. We see it all the time wherever we go.The new chicken salad they introduced has more calories then a big mac and 51 grams of fat . There 79% daily fat in take recommend....

Morgan took into 30 pound of sugar = 1 pound a day and 12 pounds of fat . You can no longer sue the companies for obesity as it is not there fault. In 2004 March time congress of the cheese burger bill it makes it illegal for people to sue them . It has pictures of fat people and MC Donald's with the voice over going on . By having allot of people going into MC Donald's they make millions of money as people are in and out of there all the time . Then at the end it came up with the captions of the previous interviewers of what happened to them . Morgan got his cholesterol and liver function back up to normal in 8 weeks. It took him 5 months to lose 20 pounds of weight. In May MC Donald's they actived the go adult happy meal .The voice over tells us the facts of the information with the use of diagrams , maps , relevant archive footage , where the map zoomeds into look at the detail of the facts  with the animation and colour coded colours . This information gives us Quantitative research with good use of numbers , facts , graph data . The open sequence is with the kids singing the tune song of MC Donald's which the kids have grown up with from a young age (child hood.)   MC Donald's is popular which everyone enjoys happy meals for kids because you get a toy with it  so that's kinda fun of it oooh you get a toy which kids love. The cartoon roars in the kids to make them have a MC Donald's .

Do they do it well??
I think they do do it well with the use of animation of maps , diagrams (colour coded colours) and drawings . It makes the audience want to look at it as it's tells us the facts of whats happening so the change from one stage to another . The colour coded colours shows a good way of knowing what's happening in each country and with the use of percentages and the colour changes throughout . It makes it understandable for the audience who is watching this and it makes it easier to read . With the visual element it shows you whats going on with all the facts that gives us the key information . The visuals are better than too much information as it could be to much but without to much information makes it easier to understand especially with the animation of it  brings the fun factor in. The use of images (archive footage) used  in this was good as it showed you America was well known for it to be fattest place for American people who love their fast food . It showed you how MC Donald's is the most popular place of fast food restaurants and that there is so many of them around the world over six contents that is allot . It showed you a research method of Qualitative research with Morgan asking people of how often they eat fast food so it good way to find out peoples reviews and opinions . It showed really good opinions , recommendation from the 3 doctors he saw with giving him medical advice and what will change of his body so it's good he went to see experts about how fastening will affect him when he does it .  I liked the animation of him from day 1 he was slim and now he got to day 30 to this fat stage and how his body changed over the month... It shows you what happened with the key facts is always good to show on diagram of what he gained , cholesterol and body fat wise and etc ..... Good use of archive footage's an cutaways. I liked the animation of the drwing of the young girl and the 19 year old girls as it tells you there height and the use of animation it soon turns up to being obese. I t shows a good way from being slim and turning into this horrible thing . It shows you have it works so I thought that worked well. But overall It was a good documentary with good use of qualitative and quantitative research .=)
